The University of Madeira is made up of 12 departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and licensure programmes in different academic areas.
Department of Art and Design
The Department of Art and Design has reconfigured its courses according to the Scientific Commission to correspond to the necessary and expected requirements in education, society, and culture. Today, it offers two undergraduate programmes.
Department of Biology
The Department of Biology has an educational structure focusing on technological development, community service, and effective research and teaching strategies. It offers three licensure programmes, one master's course, and two internship degrees.
Department of Chemistry
As of 2002, the Department of Chemistry was made up of 12 staff members, over 100 undergraduate, and about 20 postgraduate students. The Madeira Chemistry Research Centre develops various scientific studies and projects including clay catalysts, enology, biomaterials, and medicinal plant studies.

Department of Physical Education and Sports
The Department of Physical Education and Sports offers degree programmes in physical education and sports.
Department of Physics
The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments in the university. It presently offers nine undergraduate courses.
Department of Psychology and Humanities
The Department of Psychology and Humanities offers academic programmes focusing on the studies of human thinking, behaviour, and creativity.
Department of Romance Studies
The Department of Romance Studies focuses on the similarities and differences of the various cultures in the world. It offers courses on Cultural Science, Intercultural Studies, and Studies on Portuguese Language and Culture for Strangers.
Department of Science Education
The Department of Science Education offers two undergraduate programmes (Educação de Infância and Ensino Básico), four licensure programmes (Science Education, Basic Education, Senior Education, and Education of Infancy), one post-graduate course (Documentary Sciences), and one master's degree (Masters in Education in Pedagogical Innovation).
